The Mines & Minerals Department of the Punjab Government, Pakistan, is responsible for the management, exploration, development, and regulation of mineral resources across the province, as well as the safety and welfare of mine workers.

⛏️ Core Functions

The department’s main responsibilities include:

  • Granting Mining Concessions: Responsible for issuing licenses and leases for the exploration and excavation of mineral resources under relevant laws (like the Regulation of Mines & Oil Fields & Mineral Development (Government Control) Act, 1948 and Punjab Mining Concession Rules, 2002).
  • Revenue Collection: Collecting rents, royalties, and fees from the mining concessionaires.
  • Mineral Development & Exploration: Conducting and promoting surveys, prospecting, exploration, and development of mineral resources to increase the sector’s contribution to the Provincial GDP.
  • Worker Welfare and Safety: Overseeing the safety, health, and welfare of mine workers, including promoting environment-friendly mining practices and mitigating environmental hazards. This is managed through attached bodies like the Inspectorate of Mines and the Mines Labour Welfare Commissionerate.
  • Policy and Legislation: Formulating and implementing policies and legislation for the sector.
